Instant Photography Makes a Comeback

I first noticed its reappearance sometime in 2009 while browsing the UrbanOutfitters website; advertised was a limited edition Polaroid One600 Classic Instant Camera and the accompanying film was listed as “coming soon” but for a “limited time only.” That night I went home and dusted off my blue Polaroid One600 and thought “I’ll see you soon.”
For months a team that calls itself “The Impossible Project” has made headlines for making salvaged Polaroid films available to the public. And now with recent news that pop singer Lady GaGa will be teaming up with Polaroid to revive the medium the analog community eagerly awaits the return of instant photography pioneered by Polaroid.
The Impossible Project’s mission is clear, their goal is NOT “to re-build Polaroid Integral film but (with the help of strategic partners) to develop a new product with new characteristics, consisting of new optimized components, produced with a streamlined modern setup. An innovative and fresh analog material, sold under a new brand name that perfectly will match the global re-positioning of Integral Films.”

The Impossible Project is saving analog Instant Photography and aims to release a new instant film for Vintage Polaroid cameras early in 2010. In order to shorten the waiting period until the premiere of its new film, The Impossible Project is proud to present the last original, carefully saved PolaroidTM film “ repackaged in a limited Special Edition designed by Paul Giambarba, who created the iconic look of Polaroid from 1958 to 1977.
Recently the International Center of Photography in New York City unveiled a Special Edition Camera Kit designed by Paul Giambarba and available exclusively at ICP which features very limited carefully saved, stored and tested Original Polaroid film designed by Paul Giambarba himself including:
- Film Type 100 (100 Sepia, 100 Chocolate, 100 Blue Film, 664, 669, 125i, 125i SILK)
- Film Type 80 (Viva Color)
- Image Film (Image, Image Softtone, Image Wildside)
- 600 Film (600)
- TZ Film (TZ Artistic)
- 4×5 Film (55)
- 8×10 Film (809)
Even though we are months away from the official launch of this revived product we can rest assured that instant photography is no longer a thing of the past but very much a part of our future.
