Things are starting to come together for singer-songwriter Chevonne. The redheaded vocal powerhouse just wrapped a stint as backup singer on Estelle’s tour. The tour included a performance in South Africa at the World Cup opening ceremony an experience Chevonne described as having brought tears to her eyes. Just this past Tuesday (on June 15th) her new song “Cat Call” leaked on Perez Hilton’s website prompting her to release the music video ahead of schedule.

“I had been holding on to it for a while,” says the singer. “[But after that] I thought let’s just put it out there, keep the momentum going.” She explained as she did her own makeup backstage at Don Hills in New York City.

Chevonne was set to take the stage that evening as one of the many performers at SteveStock in The Summer an event that showcases some of the founder’s, Steve Beer, favorite artists. The Estelle gig, the singer revealed came practically out of nowhere. “I had auditioned for Lady Gaga’s current tour, to sing back up. I had made it far enough in the audition [process] that it was down to the last four. Myself and three other girls. I got to meet Gaga, exchange words with her. She was so nice.”

She continued, “In the end I was told that they liked my voice but that it was clashing with the other girls’ voices. Theirs were a lot lower and mine is high so I didn’t get it.”

But as luck would have it, another girl at that audition reached out informing her of an upcoming audition for British R&B star, Estelle, in New York. “I can’t remember if this girl texted me or facebooked me, the point is [she got a hold of me and] I got to audition.”

Her high voice was the perfect match and she was asked to pack her bags and embark on the multi-city tour. “I love Estelle,” said Chevonne. “Whenever she needs me I’ll be there for her. I hope that someday when I [branch out] and do my thing she’ll be there for me too.”

When she isn’t “hustling,” as she called it, booking gigs as a backup singer she’s busy writing and recording her own music. The idea for “Cat Call” came literally as she walked down the streets one day. The singer admitted enjoying the attention of men and giving them a reason to watch her walk away. The words came to her instantly and by the time she had gotten home most of the song had been written in her head.

Although she’s enjoying the rise to stardom she isn’t in any hurry to put out a full-length album just yet. The singer revealed she still wants to tour the club scene with the tracks she has recorded and test them out, allowing for her to build a strong foundation and expand her fan base.  “It’s all about them,” she said. “I will love them, be there for them, perform what they want as long as they let me.”
