New Music Tuesday (Week of June 28th, 2011)
Weird Al Yankovic, “Alpocalypse”
Weird Al Yankovic is back and he’s poking fun of everyone from Lady Gaga to Taylor Swift. His 13th studio album, “Alpocalypse,” is full of hilarious parodies including leadoff single, “Perform This Way,” an homage of sorts to Lady Gaga’s whimsical costuming set to chart topper, “Born This Way.” But the album isn’t all fun and giggles Yankovic takes on the paparazzi in a track titled, “TMZ” in which he sings to Taylor Swift’s “You Belong With Me”, “They’re out there praying you’ll have a big meltdown/ take them to a car chase through this whole town/ they’ll be there with you when you go to jail/ first on the scene for every world told fail…” Other parodies include, “Party in the CIA” (Mylie Cyrus’ “Party in The USA”), “Another Tattoo” (parody of B.O.B’s “Nothing On You”) and the ingenious Doors inspired song listing ads one could find on Craig’s List titled, “Craigslist.” Weird Al Yankovic’s “Alpocalypse” proves that the comedian is relevant and still has what it takes to make us laugh.
Steve Shiffman & The Land of No’s, “Death & Love” (July 19th)
New York City-based Steve Shiffman & The Land of No’s captivate listeners with their 3-track EP, “Death & Love.” The songs are well-crafted, beautifully sung and full of melodies that leave you wanting more. From opening track, “Atlantis,” to “Truth or Propaganda” there’s no denying that this rock group will make a big splash in the alternative indie rock scene once they ultimately release their full-length LP.
Miss May I, “Monument” (Deluxe Reissue)
Currently on this year’s Van’s Warped Tour, Miss May I brings a fresh take to the heavy metalcore scene. Their sound is loud, in-your-face but never overpowering with vocals screamo kids dream of, add some kicking guitars and thrashing drums and you have Miss May I. The deluxe reissue of their widely popular 2010 release, “Monument” features three brand new unreleased studio tracks, a B-side, as well as a DVD featuring all of the band’s music videos, interviews, live songs and more. A must have for any fan.
Ocean Grove, “Another Place To Stay”
Ocean Grove’s self-released new EP, “Another Place To Stay” features five of the most enjoyable, catchy, crafty, radio-friendly tunes I’ve heard in a long time. Opening track, “Away” features beautiful harmonies and equally enjoyable melodies, while track, “So Cool” is a sweet ode to an unattainable crush set to delicious grooves. The album is full of feel good tunes that will be sure to have you swaying along.
