It goes without saying that among the star athletes of the New York Liberty, another team member is shining just as brightly, lighting up the internet with her unique fashion choices, captivating dance moves, and overall swag. I am, of course, talking about the team mascot, Ellie the Elephant (Miss Ellie if you’re nasty!). She has graced the cover of “SLAM” magazine, appeared in “Vogue,” and appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert last year, following the team’s historic WNBA Championship win, for which I was in attendance. It also goes without saying that when invited to cover the player tunnel arrivals, specifically the outfit reveal and entrance of Ellie the Elephant on Noche Latina in the game against the Chicago Sky, I emphatically said yes. What followed was the experience of a lifetime. I was in awe of Ellie’s stunning outfit and her energetic entrance. Her halftime performance has drawn hundreds of thousands of TikTok views, and the crowd’s reaction was electrifying.

Additionally, being in the presence of excellence, professionalism, and badassery from the players, and being invited to sit courtside during shoot-arounds and warm-ups was truly unreal. At times, I felt like I was under a spell, mesmerized as these ladies created all these intricate shots; it was hypnotizing. Seeing the players’ genuine joy of just being there, on the court, making moves, shooting balls, and being present and focused, and on top of that, being super generous with their time interacting with fans was inspiring.
